Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas was almost on par with the novel, as was 2001 (could be argued that in some ways, it surpasses the book).

Hannibal the movie was actually loads better than the novel.

My problem with I, Robot is that it barely resembled the novel outside of the name on the cover. It wasn't quite as bad as I Am Legend but they're both atrocities that used a popular novel's name to weave a vastly different story that is inferior in every regard  to the novel.

I take it the book wasn't very good at all then.

It wasn't. Lector and Clarice ran off to live happily ever after together. I nearly burned the book right there as it betrayed the spirit of both characters completely. Ridley Scott's decision to have Hannibal sacrifice his hand to escape once again was a far, far, FAR better choice for an ending. It was more true to what the characters had been doing up to that point. It was obvious that they were fascinated with one another (possibly even to the point of love) but on the other hand, they could not coexist and something had to give.
