For kicks, I was browsing through reviews to see how each movie fared. I didn't find one movie really blowing the other out of the water, though it's hard to find pre-1995 reviews on the modern interwebz.

The Terminator: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terminator/

T2: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terminator_2_judgment_day/

This is about as best as you can find.

Lolz, can't beleive T1 actually got slightly better reviews that T2 (still doesn't change the fact that I liked 2 more than 1 though). What's funny is that both these movies got better reviews than a lot of Best Picture Oscar winners.

The problem with RT and its rating of older, pre-internet, films is that few outside of hardcore fans of the movie ever bother to review it. If you look through pre-1996 film scores, you'll see the majority of them inflated beyond belief.

True, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is a prime example. That moive's score is absurd (it doesn't hold a cande to Pixar's current work or to Beauty and the Beast).

Still when I check out the scores for The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind I can't help but smile and agree .

FTR not all old movies have inflated scores.

Cleopatra (it was mentioned on this topic): http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1004330-cleopatra/
