After Gettysburg, the next movie we watched in class was...
Awesome movie that starts off slowish but continuously gets better. Part of history that's, like, never talked about. Very good characters. Too bad we skipped the sex scenes, lolz (well I saw a few nipples).

Yeah I liked Gangs of NY a lot.
lol you must be really young if they show you movies at school.
|
lol I'm in 11th grade (and I have some 12th graders in my class), not that young. Also the class I'm talking about is an elective called History Through Film.

I think GoNY was a good choice for this kind of class. While the movie disappointed me with its average maincharactergetshisrevengeplusthegirl story, I liked it for the very interesting historical setting which was rarely used before in any movie - if ever. The set design and the powerful, aggresive acting and directing are phenomenal.

I liked the set design, aggressive acting was also suitable for the characters, but the grotesque side of too many of them was so exaggerated that it ruined the movie for me, as it wasn't supposed to be a parody, but sometimes it unintentionally arrived to look so. A big wasted opportunity.

Yes, as I said I was disappointed either, but when I watched it recently for a 2nd time I ignored the predictable storytelling and the overdone characters and just watched it for the historical setting and events. Gangs of NY is one of Scorsese's weakest movies imo but still an interesting experience. I can't say that about the acclaimed Departed or After Hours which disappointed me much more for different reasons.
