Sad thing, a while back PS3 was the only console I honestly felt didn't need to be hacked.
They gave you freedom with linux
The supported user-generated content with Unreal Tournament 3, LBP, Modnation, EchoChrome, Joe Danger, and a number of other games
They gave developers freedom with how they develop their games, features and DLC
Option for 2 audio output sources
The supported a huge list of supported codecs [even without linux]

They're now even pushing for full retail games on the PSstore [inFamous, SOCOM, burnout, warhawk, LBP, GT5p, Red Faction: G, PSP games, PS1 games and probably what ever isn't too big to go there and developers want to be there in the future]

There's no real reason to hack the system other than "I want free games".
