In general isn't homophobic defined as being afraid or having a deep contempt for gays?

He only mentioned he can't 'deal with them' which I would take to simply mean they annoy him.

When a person is afraid of something they don't show that directly, instead they show a great dislike for it (hate). Fear comes from not understanding a person or not knowing the person at all.
