Master Chief isn't the only Spartan to survive the attack on Reach, even though the games make it seem like he is. Also he survived as he was not on the planet but on a space dock trying to destroy some important information. He than left on the Pillar of Autumn and went to Halo, which is where Halo CE takes place

The books were pretty awesome..but the books and game are from what i understoor two different story lines. Great trailer tho...they should make a movie...instead we got district 9...

I am pretty sure the books are canon. The Fall of Reach ties into Halo CE and First Strike bridges the gap between Halo CE and Halo 2. Also Ghosts of Onyx introduces the Spartan IIIs which is who you are playing in Halo Reach.

In the third book i believe master chief goes back to Reach and finds out a few spartans have survived. He get them off Reach and back to earth. Ghosts of Onyx is much later...i think its right before the end of Halo 3. The characters in Ghosts of Onyx are young teen spartans who are taught by one of the Spartans who was on Reach.  The new Spartans armor isnt like the Mjolnir suite the old spartans have..it sorta can active camo..but it cant take the sort of damage the old suite could. I might be wrong..but if the books were in tune with the game..then we should have seen and heard of other Spartans being brought back in Halo 2.
