l to am an atheist had to go through the Sunday school church- alter boy ritual , i stopped after high school never actively mentioned  my views   . My dad didn't say anything about me no longer going to church but then again he always believed love was unconditional,  plus mum wasn't a church goer either , she was like a lot of people of past generations declared herself christian on the census forms but never went to church and didn't seem to worry about whether there was a god or not . It maybe prudent to leave the question of your atheism on the back burner till your no longer dependent on your parents sort of ignore both  religion and atheism if possible. It is sad that the people we love and who say they love us have to make there love conditional, you see family's torn apart some times over trivial things such as not following in the family business marrying  some one they didn't like after they met them for  5 minutes etc and its not just the parents you have children saying we want  this and that or you wont see the grand kids.

True, and it's a real shame. Also, since you say you were an atar boy, did a priest try to sexually abuse you? And since what age were you an atheist?
