If he would have swerved and made it so that the SUV would hit is left front tire.. the SUV would have bounced off the axel.. I've done it when a drunk driver in a mustang was going head on towards me, went over his own lane went into mine.. I turned the car so that the mustang would hit my front left tire.. my car didn't get any damage, but a scratch on the left side.. his car was tore up, ripped the side open on his car and lifted his hood.
I learned this technique when I ran head on into a station wagon that didn't stop at a stop sign and I went straight into her front left tire. Her car didn't have any damage but a small dent around the tire wheel. My car's whole front got crushed in and was almost totaled
But sad story indeed.. A hero in his own right..
