The idea of a tablet PC is nothing new, but it has failed every time. It failed, because people were trying to stuff laptops into tablets. Why the iPad is so good (and same for an android tablet once someone makes a good one, this might be it), is it takes a well known and proven touch interface and applies it to a device that is big enough to do more with. I have an iPad, MacBook Pro, and iPhone. I could watch Hulu on any of these. But when my wife and I go to bed and want to watch a 30 minute show before we go to sleep, we reach for the iPad. The phone seems to small, and the laptop to much trouble. Right now, as I type this, my wife is looking at the iPad and making a recipe from a website. She could do this on the phone, but it's kind of small to be reading while sitting on the table with her hands messy. She could use a laptop, but she has moved it from counter to counter 5-6 times already. She would not do that with a laptop. Also, I charge it once or twice a week, and we seem to use it all the time. Battery life is amazing. Better then both the phone and the laptop. So while there is nothing we can do with the iPad that we could not do before, we now do more of them, because they make more sense to do. It's hard to quantify how great the iPad is. All I can say, is if she broke it tonight, I would have another ordered before I went to bed. |
ok, I guess I can see a usefullness to a tablet in general. Just not something that I'd need/want as I'm good with just sitting in the front room watching TV - interenet through PS3 - and using phone for recipe things you mentioned. Plus, she is still having to clean off hands to move it from counter to counter and the phones have zoom ability so its not too cumbersome on a 4" screen. However, if I travelled a lot, I'd want the larger screen for movies, etc.
