Twitter is an excellent tool to keep up with current trends within an industry. I follow several tech and design tweets that constantly feed me information that I wouldn't find otherwise without searching.
I also use it to follow baseball but other than that, I don't really use it for personal stuff at all. Facebook works better for that, IMO.
