Anyway, appealing and something I like aren't the same thing which is what explains the number of people not liking Halo. I don't know how much customization affects Halo's appeal but I'd say one important thing is that the game is pretty simple at its core. It's easy to learn and play, but (probably, as I don't have that much experience) hard to master. Also, it's a pretty well-balanced package.

That is still extremely weak compared to what you can get in UT/Quake/HL. Did you know TF and CS came from HL's moddability? Call me when anything from forge becomes its own game to sell millions.

OT: I fully agree with you on what you said, as long as it pertains solely to consoles. As soon as you include the PC Halo falls in the middle of the pile. Between all customizability and show of skill that you mentioned (try spamming in UT and Quake and you will get ripped to shreds).
