My condolences.
My grandfather also died a short time (three months), he was in a vegetative state because of a stroke (aka CVA) since 1997. He really endured a lot, the doctors have given two days of life for him, after the past two days, they gave two months, after two months, they have not estimated how long he would survive, and he survived 13 years.
And about you not being able to say goodbye to him, do not worry, if you loved him, he would know you wanted to be there with him when he passed away.
