It's one of the best indicators we have. It's called mass media for a reason after all.

Casuals have hype, otherwise the Wii wouldn't have been so hard to find in shops in its first years on the market. 

IGN and GameSpot are not the media, they are just media, and they are so for a niche audience. Mass media like nation wide TV channels and what have you are a in a different league, because it's something almost everyone sees. Any media can change people's opinions and what they might be hyped for, but the mass media has a much, much larger audience than sites like IGN and GameSpot.

i still dont think that we cant know weather casuals have hype or not! i will live in denial!

and the wii didnt have hype, did the casuals want to buy it before it released? no it didnt, when they launched they had interest, hype is interest before a certain item releases.
