This was already deunked several times. All the people playing MW2 were concentrated in the first couple pages of the members list of the boycott group.
The truth is, MW2 did worse than COD4 both on retail and digital stores.
MW2 didn't get better than than COD4 on retail, especially considering that retail markets are considerably smaller than when COD4 came out.
MW2 is only available on Steam. When COD4 came out, it was topping charts in several DD stores, including Steam and D2D.
