No, I think they are doing this so people will not stock pile on cards before the hike. Unless your cards have some sort of use by date you should be fine.

You can buy 1 year cards from some retailers for $40, Microsoft said that they will let people renew and stock up on 1 year cards for a limited time until Price raise hits.

Microsoft is only doing this due to the new SEXY controller that is coming out, Apps, Windows  phone 7, and hopefully some new suprises.
