I've just listed the name of the places where he's going, which is pretty much common knowledge at this time
I didn't give any hints regarding any particular part of the game, not even which minigame it is 
Yes it does give you more freedom and optional choices (Gongaga, the hidden Cave man, Enemy Skill materia growth are the primary optional stuff to do, outside hidden characters that I won't mention), but as in almost any FF game, the path itself is very linear until a certain point.
FFXIII just took it to the extreme of being a "corridor" experience in the world itself, as even in Pulse, you only get to explore a small part of the planet itself, yet it was big enough to "feel" as open an exploration as having a world map, due to the vastness of Pulse. A shame that the things to do in Pulse were limited pretty much to only doing the missions.
