When you subscribe directly through the console it requires an auto-renewal subscription with your billing info, so I'm sure the plan is something along the lines of get as many Silver subscribers to switch to an auto billed Gold subscription for $40, which will be $60 in another year.
While you lose the big convenience factor, the cards remain the best way to buy XBL Gold subscriptions so that you don't get locked into the regular rate, which will always be the highest compared to regularly discounted cards bought through Amazon or whoever.
