People said that about Android...

Personally I don't expect it to set the world alight but Microsoft have some innate advantages which will allow them to carve up a decent segment of the market to build off. They don't have to beat Android/iPhone with this release, they just need to get the ball rolling in their direction.

I know they don't have to beat Android/iPhone. That's not what I am talking about.

I am talking about a Zune level of fiasco. Phone 7 will initially take 2-3% of the smartphone market and then vanish within a year or two.

Thats doubtful. With the Zune they entered in the arse end of a declining market. With Windows Mobile 7 they already have a good base to work with. They would have to lose market share to fall to 2-3% of the market and every indication is that they will at least hold steady on their market share with this release.

Microsoft has some strengths coming in to the market.

1. Name recognition. Hands up if you know what Windows is? It happens to share the same name with their best / most favoured OS release to date.

2. They have some of the best exchange implementations for corporate users.

3. Rock solid security.

4. Xbox Live. Sure its worth only a million sales at best, but thats a million they would have otherwise not got. Also it gives them a leg up on attracting developers and selling content.

5. They are spending a lot of money. Sure it won't buy them entry, but it definately doesn't hurt.

Tease.
