I think most people fail to understand the situation. First, the men are in an extensive area of the mine with access to many tunnels. There is even a small area where they have benches. The problem is the ventilation. The men choose to stay in a corridor near a small shaft where air is being pumped in.

The problem with the mining is they are in very deep and even before they can start digging they have to clear the debris that resulted from the initial cave in. Its a very precarious situation because when they do dig an escape shaft it too could collapse killing rescue workers.

It will take a miracle to get those men out. But miracles have been known to happen.
