3DTV was developed in the Nineties at several German research facilities. The problems were/are simply too numerous when trying to mass manufacture these thingies. You can use the same method as Nintendo is using with the 3DS. This will make one viewer, and one viewer only, very happy while s/he sits at the "sweet spot", the rest of the family gets headaches. You can build TVs that render an entire group of people happy, but that costs a fortune (basically you need to transmit 2 pictures for very watcher and tricky optics). Also people actually need to be trained for 3D watching (you need to focus to the tv front surface and not to the perceived depth at all times which causes headaches for some people).
