Looks awesome, but when you say Redline I expect it to be about cars and that is clearly not the case. :(

most anime in the late eighties to the early 1990's had a style similiar to this, everything was far more detailed to a point of near ridiculousness.  Some examples include the guys that did the Macross Do you remember love movie and stuff that Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the guy that made Ninja Scroll and the second Vampire Hunter D did.  Its only recently that anime art design has regressed to oversimplified styles, I'm glad that it seems like they are going back to the late 80's 1990's OVA style.


Let me clarify, it's bleeding edge in terms of animation techniques.  I'll agree it's a retro style, but it's made with modern techniques.  Kind of reminiscent of Casshern Sins, but on a whole 'nother level.  Regardless, I have seen plenty of old anime and that is NOT the style it uses.  It does have a similar level of detail (at times, old anime can vary greatly in quality depending on how much animation is necessary), but that doesn't make their styles similar.  Facial structure, shading, etc. are all reminiscent of American comics, not old anime.

 

fair enough on it being "bleeding edge" but thats common sense, I never meant tnat they busted out animation cels and drew this by hand.  I was simply saying it looked more like a late 1980's early 90s anime, much like the "retro style" that you said.  I even posted that video of "the contender" which was obviously a direct influence for this.  I have to disagree that "facial structure" and such has anything to do with it as I can pull hundreds of shows that have different art styles out and point out that no 2 look the same.  It's all based on what studio does the animation.  Yes there are fads, much like how all anime as of late looks flat and simplistic like Full Metal Alchemist, but if you go back ten years everything was trying to be like american comics. 

 

I'm 27 and have been watching anime for 20 years, If if feels "oldschool" to me just let me go with my opinion.  The rampant "moe" genre has killed much of my anime fandom, so anything that ignites the spark I had when I rented Akira on VHS back in 1991 is a good thing.
