Why is this so essential?

Has it really done anything for Sony? I don't see their console sales skyrocketing becauase of 1st party games.

Anyhow, they do have quite a few IPs already. I'd assume they have projects in the works as well.

A lot of the major Xbox 360 games are only timed exclusives (e.g. Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden, Bioshock). This is mainly because they're not from first party developers. The PS3 has more and more exclusives compared to the Xbox 360. And for new consumers, that could be a good reason to get a PS3 instead of the 360.
