Personal story regarding home movie rentals:
When I was 12 years old in 1996, I must have rented out the entire shelf of SNES games at All the Best Video, which is a local business with two stores in my town.
Hollywood Video opened up 2 blocks down on a busy intersection in 1998. Come March 2010, Hollywood Video has filed Ch. 11 bankruptcy for the 2nd time in 3 years laying off all Hollywood and GameCrazy employees, some of whom were high school friends who had well paying managerial jobs.
All the Best Video is still around at their original locations, while the twin behemoths Blockbuster and Hollywood Video have been slain by the dragonslayers Coinstar's RedBox and NetFlix.
The big business brick-and-mortar home movie industry dies, while the local, indie home movie rental stores still exist. I would have expected the opposite, but then again it goes to show you that the type disruption from Netflix and RedBox have shown can uproot and overturn an entire industry.
