It had nothing to do with an "campaign of intimidiation." It's a campaign of common sense.
They have the right to build a 15 story community center, but it's a douchebag thing to do. You literally can't miss the new building where the WTC subway is. It'd be the equivlent of building a church right next to like, every abortion clinic every bombed, when you consider the size of it... and the fact that people want to pay their respects there.
As for this event... I would be surprised if this didn't happen every week... and also in churches and synagouges.

You keep using that example and I see nothing wrong with it. I'm atheist so I'm opposed to a church (or mosque/synagogue) being built anywhere. But unless you can prove that the people building the church bombed the abortion clinic you are just punishing a group of people because they have an association to a couple of extreme criminals.
I honestly don't know why the debate continues to rage because there are no plans to stop the community center from being built and it is privately owned.
It comes down to this simple question: Is it okay for a church or other religious temple to be built 2 blocks away from Ground Zero? If yes, then a mosque is okay too.
OT: Yeah the media is totally blowing things out of proportion and will only cause things to get worse.

And by building it... you are punishing the people who's family died in that clinic because you wanted a church right there.
This has NOTHING to do with legal rights.
It has everythign to do with responsibility.
It's extremely irresponsible and insensitive for them to build the mosque there... and people are upset because of it. Not a big surprise.
They have just as much legal right as any other religion. The point is... it's insensitve.

Yeah well these are people who understand the difference between the scum that killed family and friends from the ones the want a mosque. Opinions arelike assholes everyone has one, fact remains that this thing will be built and short of extreme measures it's not gonna be stopped. Life is way to short to be bitching and moaning over something like this, it's being built and people need to deal with it. Some countries don't want out military in their country (japan) but we aren't leaving are we?

No one is getting enslaved, the only ones getting the bigotry are the one building the mosque. Rush Limbaugh says some of the most offensive things, he has been protested but he is still here. Most americans were for the war before they were against it but it didn't end when they started complaining (we jsut got another one lol). Everyone has the right to voice their feelings I have no objection to that, it's just that the odds are always stacked against us and sometimes I feel this "freedom of speech" is just something to make us feel that we have power. I see your point and understand that people may be hurt over this but sometimes there is nothing we can do. To stop this would conflict with everything that makes this country great, freedom is a two way street. If I came off as hostile I apologize...there are more pressing things in the world and I just don't understand why so much energy is going into this.

You're making my point for me.
People are free to do things that will knowingly hurt others, but they also have to deal with the consqeunces of doing so.
It's common sense they should build it elsewhere rather then traumitize people... and they have to deal with the public legal reaction of people exercising their own rights speaking against it. Period.
To do otherwise would simple breed hostility underground and make things worse.
I mean, let me ask you something... have you ever been in a serious relationship? If your partner makes a decision without consulting you and it pisses you off... which is healthier? Not saying anything and burying it and living with it? Or bringing it up and getting in a big arguement about it?
It's thte second 100%. Trying to bottle up the protests is what would cause "anti-islamic hatred." Now allowing people to express their opinions.
So much energy is going in to it, because it's common sense that the people who started the project should of known better from a human compassion point of view... for an issue that's seen by a lot of people as the biggest moment in the decade.
I can see that and I don't even see 9/11 as that big a deal.
