Actually, that unique chest you're talking about, is one of the four unique chests that you must not open during the entire game, until you reach the necrohol of nabudis.
Once in the necrohol of nabudis, once you reach the room of 12 chests, if you didn't open any of the four unique chests, it will randomly appear on any of the 12 chests. If you did open any of the unique chests, an Elixir will appear instead of the Spear.
The other way to get the Zodiark, is indeed with a 1/1000 chance chest... but inside the Henne Mines B1, which is the FFXII equivalent of hell XD (enemy levels start from 68 and upwards).

I thought that as well, lol. i had finished the the Crystal Grande, with Ultima, and i thought that the Henne Mines would be a pushover, lol. how wrong i was. the other area that was a killer was the Subterrainen levels of the Pharos...= phenominal gameplay design!!

Yup, both areas were very difficult in their own manner. Crystal Grande had an extremely tough bit prior to the fight with Omega MK XII, where there was infinite waves of Forbbiden and Reapers, all over level 60.
Pharos Subterra had a lot of enemies, especially in the inner ring, where you could be swarmed by Mistmares, Dragon Lich and Zombie Warlocks. The Elite Mark fight against the Shadowseer was a toughie as well.

I think i grinded hard to level 90 when i fought Shadowseer, but i didnt think that it was so much him as it was getting to him. but i loved the Mark hunting in that game. imo the best 2 were the ones in the Bujerba Mines; one where you fight Diablos and you find out it was the children who gave you the hunt - just so haunting. and of course... Gilgamesh.
