The truth about that is that the orignal direction of the game Yasumi Matsuno planned to have Basch as the main character. the story wouldve focused on his personal story of redemption to finally facing the Judge who falsely condemed him to prison. but part of the team had dissagrements about the Japanese target demographic and instead forced Vaan and Penelo into the game; this explains why the story never really has much to do with the. by the way Matsuno never finished the game, but if he had, it wouldve been phenominal!!
