It isn't a matter of a huge jump. It is a matter if giving it a reason to exist next to the Killzone series the way Gears does with Halo. Don't just be the second sci-fi shooter by Sony, but be something on top of that. As of now, tweaks to Killzone 2 to make the controls more accessible, and also split screen mean really no reason to have Resistance. Even MAG provides something Sony's other FPS offerings don't, and the same can be said for Socom. I say this being a fan of the Resistance game world (I like alternate history).
