Actually, the much improved memory architecture (which was also really GC's achilles heel) makes quite a few more things possible, including stuff like normal maps in game with little performance hit.  The spec jump from GC to Wii isn't really too dramatic though, it's very comparable with GB to GBC or DS to DSi.  In other words, more like a half step revision than a full next gen cycle transition.

The problem with Wii really is more that it's (modestly) improved chipset is rarely pushed, which is due to a combination of standards (ie: TEV as a boutique renderer no one wants to learn) and market philosophy (3rd parties pigeonholed it for casual shovelware, not AAA budgets).
