Why don't publishers work together and create their own game stores?

Obviously my idea was fantastical, but I still think that a trial could at least take place in a few US states and I think that if they start off offering the best content and deals, then I don't see why they can't rival Gamestop. At the moment, Gamestop are the only one of their kind (that's actually big), the only other competitors are none game orientated stores like Target, BestBuy etc. They could at least try opening an online store and then work from there.
