Valkyrie Profile, damnit! It saddens me that so few have experienced this gem (iirc it only sold 77k in the west). It's a masterpiece and one of my favourite games. The sequel was amazing as well and it's battle system is one of the best ever made.
If you want a JRPG with a mature story and incredible character design look no further! It's damn expensive but it's totally worth it.
