The only system that i have had to re-buy was another PS2 when my dad broke my launch console, bought the silver one when it came out and now got a slim used as a DVD player in the bedroom (bought for my dad but got it back a few years ago since he is a PC gamer now, recently changing to PS3 due to costs)
