No it isn't. Play Opoona, Golden Sun, Secret of Mana, etc.

EDIT: Well yes it is common in the genre now, but that only confirms the notion that FFXIII is mediocre (even bad). Final Fantasy used to be at the top of the JRPG genre, now it's run of the mill below average at best.
