No real strategy or planning, I started a Royal and most of my fighting is done sword and shield, though I often switch to magic attacks for certain enemies.  If I find an item that seems cool I use it.

no wonder the game's difficulty is overrated. You're basically on "casual" difficulty.
Demon's souls difficulty level is primarily based on class.
