Why does everyone think a firmware update will stop the mod from working?  The wii has had a bunch of firmware updates and they get cracked within weeks.

If DigitalFoundry is right, that's actually not a hack. Someone stole/got a program (or code, have no idea) to run the PS3 as a debug unit, the same way devs have. The HDD backup is available for developers, plus they can run unsigned code. That's (probably) how these guys are running games from the HDD.

A simple software update plus new codes for developers would effectively cut out this "hack". new games would have this update and Sony forces some mandatory updates for online gaming, which would remove that code from these guys.

Feel free to correct me, as I understand just a little of this stuff.

I really don't don't know.  The last time I modded a console for gaming was the original Xbox and I've put homebrew on the wii for the extras.  Microsoft tried to force firmware updates on games and such and all you had to do was load the game onto the console and the run a patching program to make it work.  And if they have already cracked one code they know how now and it probably won't take long to crack the new one.  I dunno, it just seems that from past experience, once a console is cracked, it's game over on stopping the mod scene.

Your 100% right on that. The hackers who work on the 360 for example usually update the scene with information when not to update your console, go on live ect, Until they find a work around for whatever new security feature that M$ puts in its updates or when there's a ban wave happening on Xbox Live.

They will figure out a work around should Sony manage to cancel out the feature or they will put out a patch for games that will allow you to remove the update if a newer game requires that you do so in order to play it.
