The Blu-Ray alone makes the PS3 more "future proof." That is the only reason why I think it will last longer. As someone previously stated, if Move or Kinect somehow become the "It" things then everything will change anyway. |
PS3 is not future proof: BR or not if MS or N release a new console in fall 2011 it will be miles ahead in terms of technical specs...and future proof to me should also involve gameplay (as Wii this gen showed): in this field PS3 is not future-proof. With Move they just copied the wii (ok, move is more advanced, but it came 4 years late and has to build up its userbase from ground zero)...while "next gen" consoles will likely explore new grounds as revolutionary gameplay proved to be a winning point this gen: i don't think you can stand the market with the PS3 alone while a new Wii-like console with better tech specs and revolutionary/new gameplay hits the market (Sony almost made the trick this gen but this was because they came from the most successful console of all time...i really don't think they could afford such a competition with the PS3)
Sony surely won't give MS again one year of head start: they came from the most successful console of all time and still this didn't prevent the PS3 from being the 3rd console in terms of sales (that managed to see the green only in its 4th year). Imagine what could happen if they give MS 1 year of advantage while coming from the PS3.
So sony can decide to prolongue the life of its PS3 even for 12 years...but surely they'll release a new console around the same time MS or N release theirs and then deciding to pull the plug off the ps3 is just a matter of strategy.
If they do what they did with PS2 they could prolongue its life...but as the results have been far off from the expectations this time Sony could rightfully decide to follow the strategy that Ms took with 360 (quit PS3 quite rapidly). On the other side MS could rightfully decide to change its strategy and continue to support the x360 that is arguably much more successful than the first xbox while launching its successor. What i'm tring to say is that the situation has changed a lot from the last gen so it's prefectly plausible that MS, N and Sony decide to explore new grounds in terms of strategy and nothing is written in stone. What is sure is that nothing is future proof with technological advance: we're playing with stuff that wasn't the state of the art even when it came out (imagine in 2011 or 2012)so trying to argue that console X is future proof is out of this world (by the time a new console comes out PS3 will be like the PS2 against the x360 or the PS3: miles behind).
