Yeah they screwed themselves for this gen, but IMO they helped themselves in the future.
1. Every PS3 having Blu-ray gave it the edge over HD-DVD and hopefully Blu-ray can make Sony some money in the future.
2. Since Sony's console is way more advanced than Nintendo's and Microsoft's it means they have less work to do next gen than their competitors. Sony can use Blu-ray again next gen as their disk format and they can re-use the cell which developers are getting good at making games for. This will mean they only have to make minor upgrades which means less development time, less cost, and they can sell it for a good starting price.
