Sure they could write a firmware update that blocks out the USB ports. They could write a firmware that blocks out the HDMI port, or the multi-out port for that matter, making the console for all intents and purposes, useless.

There are simpler ways of preventing an external hardware hack based upon an understanding of how a given hack works. To continue to use the hack will essentially boil down to having to use the current firmware on the PS3 and never connecting the console to PSN again, which is crippling enough itself.

Will people do this? Sure. Buy another PS3. Would it have a major effect on PS3 game sales? It all depends on quickly the issue is dealt with.

so your saying an update would fix this easily? Would you mind explaining to me how this piracy crap happens, i'm still lost on how disc based games are being converted into digital copies.

After all what I read its not as easy to solve for Sony as it seems. This USB dongle is actually something special i cant remember a case where the hacking route was like this. They activate the debug mode in the retail PS3 and are then able to run unsigned code. That means they can run their own stuff on the PS3.

the people in the psx-scene forum said that its not an exploit but its comparable to a Pandora Battery for PSP. And Sony hasnt found a solution for those batterys.

there is a rumor that those USB sticks are the same which Sony uses themselfs and someone stole it. Actually this is INTENDED by Sony. Its just not intended that someone else gets its hands on it. If thats true then this would be the first time something like that happened.

Disc based games are digital. Games on Disc are the same like a game on a harddrive the same row of 0 and 1s. (if thats what you were aiming at)
