A lot of the TED talks are like that though, people are introducing new technologies that their companies are working on. Most companies are working on tech for profit, thats how it works.
The difference is most of the time it's tech that you will never be using in your life whereas Kinect is something more mainstream that everyone on this site knows and debates about daily.
It doesn't mean it's not interesting technology that has the potential to be used outside of video games.
