I believe the primary reason for religion is to try and give purpose and direction to someone's life in a way that transcends natural law, not to simply be a platform for argument. I would, however, agree that a fallout of most (but not all) religious organizations is disagreement based on religious tenants. As a counter example of disagreement I present the Amish. I've spent time with them, and they're incredibly passive and non-intrusive on the beliefs of others.

Belief is different than religion, belief may give purpose, but religion is an organization and organizations seek control over people, and the best way to control people is to give them an enemy to hate and fear, someone who is different than they are and not "god's chosen people" for example
