The problem is PS2 and XBox aren't in the same situation than PS3 and XBox360. In PS2 you had the most dominant console in ages, and in XBox you had and endless pit of money lost (nVidia and hard disk agreements) but it is vastly different with PS3 and XBox360.
Another thing is that the consumers dictate when a console dies, not the companies (I mean that if the users don't buy consoles, Sony can't sustain in the market the PS3s for 10 years)
