1080p is really nonsense and really shouldn't be tooted, like how Sony is doing with the PS3..
I notice the difference, of course the step upwards from 720p to 1080p output isn't as great as looking at movies in NTSC versus 720p. Lair is 1080p, but not rendering in FullHD, you can have a 1080p game rendering just 10% more pixels than a 720p game.
I don't think Sony is advertising 1080p much at this point, of course they should mention specs like 1080p, 7.1 audio, deep color, etc support. Just walk into any consumer electronics store and you will see the HDTV specs listed, IMO not listing such core fundamental specs like output resolution could be misleading towards consumers.
