little note, on GT4:
_ It released in 2005 when PS2 was at 82Milions
so now you left GT3 out and jst focusing on GT4
and even these number are lower than the 140m
_after 20 weeks the game was at 5.7M, selling 32K (decreasing steadily)... so if it maintained that rythm to sell it's full numbers, it had to keep selling for over 2 years...
not really POLYPHONY has already put out there numbers shiped in well before and VGC still isn't on the same point
_well into the PS3's lifespan... Dec 2008 it sold 30K per week, Dec 2009 6K a week.
That's VGC numbers
sure but the shipment had already taken place
there were some problem in GT4 numbers on VGC if you have been on the site long enough and noted.
for some time GT4 was stuck at 9.5m at VGC and then suddenly bumped to 10.4m.
so Polyshony's shiped number which stated 10.5m way before is the more reliable

I left out GT3 cause the numbers here are vastly incomplete and it didn't serve the argument, GT3 sold when the PS2 was between 20M and 82M.... which is still significant.
On the rest, I stand corrected, I was unaware of the VGC numbers problems... though you say shipped and not sold :p
in any case, GT4 sold much less, especially if you compare it to the install base, was it the promise of GT5 that reduced the sales?
The only reason I brought the numbers up was because it serves my argument of competition being a reason to expect lower sales... but then again, most of the direct competition (exact same game type) is on 360 and not PS3
