I think i'll stick with 2 GTx460's in SLI, sorry guys.

If you want future proofing you get 1 GTX 480, and down the road in a few years when the single card isn't enough you SLI that. Currently you are already at the peak of what your system can do without buying a whole new set of cards. Also by the time that a single 480 isn't enough, they will be down in price. But whatever floats your boat.

The thing is always when I do want to upgrade then there are always newer and better graphic cards that beat 2 of the old even in SLI. Most of the time they aren't even much more expensive. Also I don't really like the power usage and warmth the GTX 480 produces.

The whole point is that the GT lines scale extremely well, in some games over 100%. So unless the future graphics cards have more than twice the power of a 480 you should be good. Also you are making absolutely NO sense. The heat and the powerusage of two 460s are higher than that of a single GTX 480. If you are so worried about those then just get a single GTX 480.

I don't know how you have set your mind on this but I can guarantee you that your cards will need to be upgraded around the same time that you will need to buy a 2nd GTX 480, and you will have to buy those new expensive ones to replace them instead of getting a, by then, cheaper one. But if you don't want to futureproof your PC that's your choice.

My god, I often agree with your opinions and I truly think your a smart person, but it wouldn't hurt you to be nicer sometimes you know. I'm betting you don't have many friends (I don't need to hear your reply about the 100 friends you supposedly have). You really got a stick up your ass. Read the conclusion of review at Tom's hardware they seem to agree with me. I know the power usage of a single GTX 480 is less, but if I ever would buy a second it just uses to much. I'm of the opinion that 2 GTX460 in SLI is future proof. The GTX460 seems to be somewhat like the 8800GT when it came out and I am really happy about my choice back then. I could also have bought a single 8800 ultra, but I don't see how I would ever get around plugging a second one in. Also I don't want to spend more than 500 euro alone on graphics cards. When the time comes to ever buy a second GTX 480, there will probably be new features on the hardware then which just wouldn't work with an then old directx11 card. I'm buying a new PC now, not because I can't run the games anymore (because everything still runs fine), but because I can't use all the newer features. Of course I also want to be able to max everything out again, but that isn't possible with directx10 cards anyway. It will probably be the same case in 3 years from now.
