Just because it's not that funny doesn't mean it's completely illogical and crazy. It's just a lame pun. If there was a smelly guy named Spenser who smelled like garbage, and maybe a trash can that was overflowing with garbage so some fell on the floor, it wouldn't be hard to put the two together into a bad joke.
