3ft is very close to your TV my arm is 2.5ft long, I suspect it would be next to impossible for two people to play 3ft infront of the screen. I think 4 to 5ft is better and I seem to recall that 6ft is optimal. I live in a small house and I can easily accommodate the requirements. Of course the other problem with standing so close is others cannot see the screen.
I think the actual requirements for using the Kinect device are very much like the wii and most of people seem to naturally stand 4 to 5ft back from the screen.
