Look at it this way if you will...
32inch hdtv..3-5 minium viewing distance...with something like kinect..seems logical you wouldnt want to be too close to your nice tv....I have a wii and if too close to the sensor bar wiimote goes nutz..and thats about 2ft mark.
3-5ft seems perfect imo.* and seeing these dance games and prty games..ima make folks stand back like 7-8ft...do not want my nice lcd gettin busted*
