I don't have a smartphone yet, but I am getting an Iphone 4.
Who said the Iphone 4 wasn't popular in Japan? Softbank (the provider of Iphones in Japan) told me I have to wait a month before I can get one as there is a long waiting list. About 2 more weeks to go...
