While I'm not a fan of statements like the bolded one (as it implies that the person who said this normally doesn't read comic books and probably never heard about e.g. Will Eisner), I can tell you that Neil Gaiman's Sandman is one of the best "serious" comic book series ever created imo. Highly recommended.
