Yeah... it's called common sense. If religion didn't exist. Those pedophiles still would... they just wouldn't be priests. It's like saying the yankees are responsible for a bunch of deaths because a serial killer was a Janitor at their stadium. He would of been a serial killer no matter his job. |
Your example about janitor being a serial killer isnt comparable to the priest having a relation of power over children particularly in the orphanages in the 60-70. The janitor would probably be a serial killer nonetheless since a Janitor job doesnt usually trigger agressivity or lust for killing. The same thing couldnt be said of an army veteran who become a serial killer. Same thing apply to the orphanage pedophile priest, he wouldnt necessarily be pedophile if he wouldnt be priest in an orphanage. Maybe he would but not neccessarily.
Its a well known fact in psychology (its not common sense it seems) that environment play a major role in the development of mental problems. A funny extreme example: if you are tomorrow taken prisoner and put in total seclusion for 5 years. Chances are that you would develop mental problem. Would you had mental problem anyway, probably not.
Between, the situation with priests and pedophilia was very bad 40-50 years ago. The percentage of pedophile priest was way higher than the percentage of pedophile in the general population. This is why many people associate pedophilia with priesthood. It doesnt came out of nowhere...
