The only reason it wasn't very well received and probably why you didn't like it...is because its not beginner freindly. If you are just starting to play the game, an experienced player will flat out demolish you. And not just beat you...but beat you with style, embarass you as well as taunt at the end. I was late in to geting in to this game...and got my ass handed to me by friends so many times. But i kept at it, and boy am i glad I did.
A lot of people were turned off by this but it was the right evolution for the series. Sales wise, turning off potential customers isn't smart though, and hence why people see it as a failure.
However I have yet to meet a street fighter pro that doesn't think SF3::3rd strike is by far the most balanced and deepest 2D fighter ever made.
